Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets failed to finish third at the CAF U-17 Championship in Niger after losing 3-1 to Guinea on Sunday.
Emmanuel Amuneke’s side opened scoring in the 28th minute through Victor Osimhen for his fourth goal of the tournament. But the Guineans drew level six minutes later through Aboubacar Toure. And five minutes later, Abdoulaye Keita shot the Guineans into the lead
before adding a second eight minutes into the second half to further extend his side’s lead over the reigning world champions.
Both sides had earlier played out a 1-1 draw when they clashed in the group phase of the competition. Nigeria, Guinea, South Africa and Mali will represent Africa at the FIFA U17 World Cup coming up in October, in Chile.
Elswhere, Gallant Amajimbos went down 2-0 to Mali in the 2015 CAF African Youth Championship final in Niamey on Sunday night but coach Molefi Ntseki said he was happy with his charges’ performance despite the defeat.
It was a high tempo game which saw the physically bigger Malians using their imposing stature to dictate the pace. But despite the scoreline, Amajimbos gave as much as they received throughout the 90 minutes.
