Thaddeus Okpara has won Nigeria’s first medal at the on-going African Junior Athletics Championship in Ethiopia. Okpara leapt 7.44m in the boys’ long jump to win the silver behind Moroccan Mohcine Khoua who won the gold medal with a jump of
7.45m. The Nigerian was leading up till the fifth jump before the Moroccan took over.
In the boys 100m, Divine Oduduru, qualified for the final after finishing first in his semifinal race with a time of 10.46secs. The other Nigerian in the boys 100m, Victor Peka, failed to make it after finishing 5th in his semifinal race with a time of 11.00secs, despite running 10.84 in ealier in the heats.
The final of the 100m boys’ event takes place today. Speaking with New Telegraph after his race, Oduduru said he was unsatisfied with the time he returned in the semis although he was still happy to have reached the final.
“It’s a good start for me although I was targeting a better result but I am happy I still won and in the final,” he said. “My target in the final will be to run 10.2 as I am not just targeting the gold alone but a better time.”
In the other races decided on Thursday, Ese Brume and Akphonsus Aniekeme, made it to the semi-final of the girls 100m while Sikiru Adewale and Fasasi are also through to the final of the 400m boys
