AAG: Team Nigeria begins title defence in Addis Ababa

Athletes and officials of Team Nigeria departed on Tuesday for the 12th edition of the African Junior Athletics Championship in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a promise to defend the title they won two years ago in Mauritius.
Team Nigeria was the overall winners at the 11th edition of the tournament two years ago after claiming nine gold, seven silver and three bronze medals to push
arch rivals, South Africa, who amassed seven gold, nine silver and eight bronze medals, to second place. Divine Oduduru and Ese Brume who were stars of the last championship in Mauritius, will also be part of this year’s competition.
Oduduru won two gold medals in 200 metres and 4×100 metres for boys while Brume won two gold medals in long jump and 4×100 metres for girls, picking a silver medal in triple jump. Speaking to New Telegraph Oduduru said: “Despite the little time we spent in camp, we are battle ready for the championship.
“I want to win the gold in all my events and that is the spirit all the athletes are going there with. The ‘can do’ spirit.” On her part, Brume said: “I don’t just want to win in the events I won at the last championship; I am targeting the 100 metres in Ethiopia.”

According to the coaches’ coordinator, Seigha Porbeni, “We have high hopes of retaining the title putting into consideration the attitude of the athletes. The spirit is very high and hopefully we can get enough gold medals to retain the title.”
