The 2015 African Women’s Volleyball Club Championship has been scheduled to hold from March 26 to April 6 in Cairo, Egypt, the Africa Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) announced on Wednesday.
An online portal, `Theinsidegames’, said that the club championship which was one of the most important volleyball competitions in the continent featured 16 clubs in the 2014 edition.
Theinsidegames said that the defending champions, Algeria-based G.S. Petroliers had automatically qualified for the 2015 edition after winning the 2014 title in Tunisia.
It recalled that the club was also awarded a wild card for the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich.
According to the publication, the host nation is currently facing political and sporting crises following the incident outside the Air Defence Stadium last week.
It reported that 22 fans died following violent clashes with police ahead of a match between Zamalek FC and city rivals ENPPI.
The deaths have led to increased scrutiny of the Egyptian police force and also caused the Egyptian Premier League to be suspended.
The country’s league was also suspended for a similar reason in 2012 when 74 fans were killed in riot at a match in Port Said
