South Africa emerged Nigeria’s semi-final opponent at the CAF U-17
Championship after they defeated Cameroon 3-1 in their last Group B
match on Sunday.
The Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets had defeated Zambia by the same score line on Saturday to emerge top with seven points in Group A while South Africa managed five points to
finish second in Group B to set up a semi-final clash with Nigeria on Wednesday at the Stade Général S. K. The Amajimbos have also secured a spot at the 2015 FIFA World Cup alongside Mali who also defeated Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 on Sunday.
The Ivoirians are the defending champions and went into the last round of matches with four points needing just a draw to advance but they were shocked by the Malians. Mali will face Guinea in the second semifinal clash on Thursday.
South Africa opened the scoring as early as the second minute courtesy of an own goal from Fokem Achille and the South Africans doubled the lead just before the halftime break from the penalty spot after Sibongakonke Mbatha was brought down in the box and the captain Nelson Maluleke stepped up and converted the spot-kick.
However, the Cameroonians managed to pull a goal back shortly after the halftime break thanks to Christian Bayemi. Amajimbos captain Maluleke came to the rescue in the 57th minute, as he turned home Mbatha’s cross to get the side’s third goal.
