Chioma Udeaja and Stanley Gumut of Nigeria emerged the Most Valuable Players (MVP) as Nigeria dominated the FIBA Africa Zone Three 3X3 Tour, which took place at the weekend in Lagos.Udeaja added the MVP trophy to her cabinet as she scored seven points
to lead Nigeria to victory (21-9) in the final game, while Gumut also scored nine points and six rebound to lead Nigeria men team past Cote d’Ivoire 17-13.
Nkechi Akashili who also lived up to her high ratings added seven points as well, while Atosu Upe added 5 points and Sarah Ogoke added two points to complete scoring for the women team.
Captain of women team, Atosu Upe said glory be to God and thank her teammates for the win. “I thank God and my team mates for the victory. We are so happy to win this FIBA Africa Zonal championship, we hope tournaments like this continue because it will help development of basketball in Nigeria.”
An elated Sarah Ogoke, who scored two points, thanked the FIBA Africa Zone 3 leadership for the opportunity to represent Nigeria once again.
Gumut expressed happiness winning the championship. “I really feel great really, it always feels great to be a champion.”
Yahaya Abdul also came up big in the final minutes scoring three of his five points, while Azuoma Dike added three points to outwit the Ivorian team who lead 9-7 and tied the game 13-13 with less than 2 minutes left.
Team Nigeria took home $2000 alongside medals and trophies for victory in the final game while Cote d’ivoire went home with $1000 including medals and Ghana who beat Togo in the 3rd place game beat Togo 18-14 won $500 for their effort.
