NIGERIANS ABROAD: Uche, Ujah on target but can’t save clubs

Nigerian forward, Kalu Uche, at the weekend found the back of the net for Spanish club, Levante, but it was not enough to prevent them from losing 4-2 to Rayo Vallecano at the Campo de Futbol de Vallecas stadium.
The Nigeria international, who joined Levante during the January transfer window, came on as a 69th minute substitute before scoring a brilliant chip for his second goal in five appearances for the struggling La Liga side.
Uche wasn’t the only Nigerian to score and still end up on the losing side though, as
Anthony Ujah did likewise for FC Cologne in their 4-1 defeat at Bayern Munich. With Bayern 2-0 up and in search of more goals, Ujah ensured the German champions paid the price for leaving him unmarked in acres of space when he headed home powerfully off a Matthias Lehmann’s cross on the stroke of half time.
It was Ujah’s second successive headed goal in back to back games, following similar success in the 1-1 draw against Hannover 96 on February 21, and he has now scored eight league goals and 10 in all competitions this season for Cologne. In Greece, Nigerian forward, Michael Olaitan, scored twice to help Ergotelis to a three-all draw against OFI Crete in a friendly game meant to keep both teams in shape following the suspension of the country’s league by the Greek government.
The 22 year old Nigerian who recovered from a career threatening slump on the pitch a year ago, joined Ergotelis on loan from Olympiakos and has so far contributed one goal to the team in their battle to avoid relegation from the three games he has played so far.

Also on target at the weekend was former youth international, Rabiu Ibrahim, who scored his first goal for Slovakian club, AS Trencin, in their 2-0 win over FK Dukla Banska Bystrica. Edward Ofere also scored his first goal, and on his debut, for Scottish team, Inverness CT, in a 2-1 loss at Motherwell on Saturday.
